IJU press statement on UP government’s insurance coverage to journalists

Indian Journalists Union (IJU) welcome the announcement by the Uttar Pradesh government on 25 September of health insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh for accredited journalists in the state every year and a grant of Rs 10 lakh in case of death due to coronavirus.

IJU however asks the UP-Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to extend the insurance cover to all working journalists as contributions of them to the society are not less than the government recognized accredited journalists who are very limited in number and are selected on the basis accommodation capacity of the government in news briefing to media.

IJU President and former member of Press Council of India Geetartha Pathak and Secretary General and Vice President of International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) reiterates that vast numbers of journalists are energetically engaged in producing media contents behind the scene and their role and contributions in serving the democracy is unparalleled.

Therefore, IJU asks the UP government to recognize this section of journalist too by extending the insurance facilities to them also.
IJU also urges the Yogi Adityanath Government to stop harassing journalists for their journalistic works and to ensure safety and security of journalists in the state.
